S1 Episode 10 - Heritage & Sacrifice (The Scorpio Races)

It's the last episode of season 1! It’s hard to say goodbye to Thisby, but our time with this text is through. We reflect on the last three chapters of The Scorpio Races and how much the characters have grown, and how much we’ve learned through our shared practice of slowing down and talking it through with each other each week. It's race day! Puck and Sean (and dozens of other hopeful winners) are headed to the beach to try their luck. Race officials won’t give Puck her colors, and even Gabe’s indignation can’t budge them, but Peg Gratton comes in clutch with something even better. Mutt takes the wrong opportunity, and it costs him his life. Sean survives, but Corr is badly hurt. And Dove, our brave, beautiful Dove, absolutely flies. Well, this section was rough. We never expected to enjoy it, but starting out with Mutt Malvern literally hamstringing a horse he thought was Corr for no good reason makes us furious all over again. Sean wouldn’t have been sorry if he’d killed Mutt (and we see where he’s coming from, though we do have to point out that murder is bad, kids). S1 Episode 7 - Yearning & Necessity (The Scorpio Races)

This week we read chapters 41-52 of The Scorpio Races and hoo, boy. Yearning, check! Necessity, check! Sean is trying to reconcile with the fact that he gambled for Corr and lost (or did he…) Puck is a comfort, although she’s a bit shirty about a jacket. We get it. Mutt manages to harass Corr sufficiently enough that he kills someone. Nice one, Mutt. But things are looking up: Malvern finally agrees to sell Corr… on the condition that Sean wins the race. Check out the full show notes on the website.
